Area: Marketplace

The D’ni Marketplace is a relatively small, open-air area where many D’ni kept small temporary shops. Shop space was rented out by the Museum administration and the staff took a small percentage of the shopkeepers’ profits. As the market had few permanent structures, there is little damage due to the Fall, however the layout and operation of the market is unclear due to the fact that many of the temporary shops and the items they sold (fruits, vegetables) have long since rotted.
D’ni Era
The market was set up in D’ni time as a way for the museum to bring in extra revenue. It was positioned so that any visitors arriving from the harbor would be forced to walk past the many food and luxury goods on display. As evidenced by receipts, the market did quite well for its size. A D’ni is reported to have said, “When you enter, your stomach feels empty. When you leave, your [wallet] is.”
Modern Era
As with the office and most of the other structures near the Museum, the market has been spared most of the looting and vandalism. Reasons include its greater distance form the Museum and the lack of much to steal or damage. Currently, the survey team is in the process of cataloging what few artifacts can be found in the market.
